- Tithe Applotment Books
- In Ireland after the Reformation, Catholic farmers, who made up the vast majority of the population, were legally obligated to pay tithes, i.e,. to give about one-tenth of their produce to the Anglican Church of Ireland.
- Initially paid in kind, i.e., agricultural produce, cash later became the method of payment and the associated tax books, Tithe Applotment Books, which were compiled between 1823 and the ending of the system in 1838, have become a vital source for genealogical research for that period because of the loss of the 1821 – 1851 census records. - Griffith Valuation Lists
- The Primary Valuation, also known as Griffith’s Valuation, was the first full-scale valuation of property in Ireland and details of property with valuations were published between 1847 and 1864. This was completed so as to assist tax gathering. The lists inform of who was occupying property in a location, size and quality of properties, including agricultural land and buildings. If a tenant, as most people were at the time, their immediate landlord was named. It, again, gives information about people and their means, at a time from which we have few other sources. See MORE
- Census records:
- Censuses were taken in Ireland each ten years from 1821. Unfortunately, due to a combination of deliberate destruction of some and others being destroyed following an explosion in the Four Courts building in 1922 during the Irish Civil War, only the census returns/ forms from 1901 and 1911 are available to us. 1921 was not completed due to civil unrest. Instead a census was taken in 1926 and its returns will be released in April 2026 under Ireland’s 100 Year Rule (the period before they can be released to the public). See MORE
