Joseph (Joe) Gerard Gallagher, Chess International Grandmaster

Joseph Gerard Gallagher, whose father Patrick is originally from Falcarragh, Co. Donegal, was born in 1964. He is a British Chess International Grandmaster and former British Champion.
His sisters Catherine, Noreen, Pauline and Marie, and brother Stephen, also played chess.
Joseph played for many years on the European chess circuit before marrying and moving to Neuchâtel, Switzerland, where he took Swiss nationality. He was awarded the title of International Grandmaster and went on to win the British Chess Championship in 2001.
Joseph is a noted author on chess opening theory, being particularly recognised as:
- An expert on the King’s Indian Defence (as Black)
- An authority on the King’s Gambit (as White)
He is also interested in poker.
