As in all things in the Ireland / England story, the Gallagher story in relation to England has been a mixed one. From the conquests and forced ejection from their homeland by the English in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the Gallagher experience often involved significant hardship.
Despite this, England became home to many thousands of Gallaghers over the centuries. They found work and settled in towns and cities across the country. Many Gallaghers served in the British military forces, and many lost their lives doing so, often far from these islands.
Today, there are approximately 30,000 people in England and Wales bearing the Gallagher surname and its variants.
