Gallagher Family History Project & One-Name Study
Finding all roots and branches of the Tree
Purpose of the Project

The intention is to gather a store of information on Gallaghers and place it in a searchable database. This resource can then be used to assist Gallaghers from all around the world to make contact with family connections.
Through analysis of the data, further knowledge can be gained that will expand and enrich the Gallagher story.
Background
It had been hoped in the past to begin a major genealogical project, but for various reasons this never happened. The original plan was to collect as much genealogical information as possible relating to Gallaghers and to create a searchable database.
As information is added, such a database can be used to make connections not previously known. This is particularly important given the scarcity of official records as we extend further back in time.
Progress to Date
Over the last couple of years, a significant amount of data has already been collected, including:
- Indexes of Births, Marriages and Deaths
- UK Census records from 1837 to 1921
- Available Irish census and civil records
This work forms part of an ongoing Gallagher One-Name Study, undertaken in association with the Guild of One-Name Studies
It is hoped to add a blog section to the website showing how this work is progressing and what insights and patterns are emerging from analysis of the data.
What Still Needs to Be Done
These indexes already contain tens of thousands of names, but they need to be:
- Further examined
- Data fully extracted
- Enriched with additional contextual information
In addition, sources of data from other parts of the world need to be gathered in a similar structured fashion.
How You Can Help
More people are needed to get involved in this data-gathering and discovery process. This is a harvest that can be enjoyable in its own right, as new insights are gained and family stories are uncovered.
If everyone collected their own family tree information and contributed it to a central Gallagher database, it could help to:
- Connect families across generations
- Reunite branches across countries and continents
- Deepen understanding of shared Gallagher heritage
