Information on the DNA Projects

There are two avenues of exploration taking place relating to Gallagher DNA testing. One, as in the Gallagher Surname Project (see below), involves inndividuals being tested. By sharing the results connections may show up and further knowledge on the Gallagher heritage may be had. The other is the

DNA Map Project.

This strategy's main intent is to build up a DNA map of Donegal, the Clan homeland. It will involve about six different sites at first  to see what the Gallaghers throw up in the line of connections in the home territory. Once those are done any queries that may arise will be followed up, perhaps with further tests. It is hoped later to spread the tests into Mayo and/or other countes of the northwest of Ireland to see what connections with Donegal appear, if any.  Three tests have so far been submitted. They relate to family origins in the north and northwest of Co. Donegal. Further tests will involve the east and south of the county. It is hoped that this will be a tool that can be used by others both inside and outside Ireland to relate via DNA test results to confirm/ open avenues of exploration in their family tree search.

Twelve test kits have been purchased from Family Tree DNA at conciderable cost to begin this journey of exploration. Donations towards this work would be greatly appreciated as it would allow further development of this work. See below on how to contribute.

 Gallagher Surname Project

If your Surname is missing and should be included, we'll be glad to add it. Please visit our website http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/g/gallagher/ and add your family to the Patriarch Page.

Surnames in the Project so far:
Galaghar, Galagher, Galgher, Galicer, Gallachar, Gallacher, Gallager, Gallaghar, Gallagher, Gallaher, Gallaugher, Gallegher, Galliher, Gallinger, Golagher, Goleher, Golliher

Requirements:

A Surname Project traces members of a family that share a common surname.
Since surnames are passed down from father to son like the Y-chromosome, this test is for males taking a Y-DNA test. Females do not carry their father's Y-DNA and acquire a new surname by way of marriage, so the tested individual must be a male that wants to check his direct paternal line (father's father's father's...) with a Y-DNA12, Y-DNA37, or Y-DNA67 marker test. Females who would like to check their direct paternal line can have a male relative with this surname order a Y-DNA test. Females can also order an mtDNA test for themselves such as the mtDNA or the mtDNAPlus test and participate in an mtDNA project“.
